The Way of the Wise
The gospel reveals the wisdom and power of God through the cross, overturning human ideas of greatness and calling us to boast only in Christ.
- The cross reveals God's wisdom — What the world considers foolish, God uses as the power of salvation for those who believe (vv. 18–21).
- Christ crucified is God's wisdom and power — Human beings seek signs, wisdom, and impressive answers, but God reveals His wisdom through Christ crucified (vv. 22–25).
- God's wisdom overturns human standards — God chooses the weak, foolish, and insignificant according to worldly standards so that no one can boast before Him (vv. 26–29).
- Christ is everything we need — In Christ we receive wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption (v. 30).
- Our only rightful boast is Christ — Because salvation is God's work from beginning to end, our response should be humility, dependence, worship, and glory in the Lord rather than ourselves (v. 31).
W.I.S.E.
- W — Worship Christ, Not Human Wisdom. 1 Corinthians 1:29, 31. The Gospel reminds us that no person has reason to boast before God. Our education, intelligence, accomplishments, position, possessions, or abilities cannot save us. Give Christ the glory for what He has given you. Don't measure spiritual maturity by worldly success. Ask, “Does my life point people to Christ or to myself?” Replace self-glory with Christ-centered worship. The wise Christian doesn't boast in what he knows; he boasts in whom he knows—Christ.
- I — Identify with the Cross. 1 Corinthians 1:18, 23. The cross may appear foolish to the world, but it is “the power of God” to those who are being saved. Don't be ashamed of the Gospel because it is unpopular or misunderstood. Let the cross shape your priorities, values, relationships, and decisions. Remember that following Christ includes self-denial and sacrificial obedience. Keep the Gospel central rather than allowing Christianity to become merely moral improvement or religious activity. The wisdom of the Gospel begins where human pride ends—at the cross.
- S — Seek God’s Wisdom Above the World’s Wisdom. 1 Corinthians 1:20–25. Paul exposes the limitations of human wisdom. The world may value intelligence, influence, credentials, and achievement, but none of these can reconcile us to God. Before making important decisions, ask: What does God's Word say? Does this honor Christ? Am I being guided by Scripture or by the values around me? Am I seeking God's wisdom or simply looking for God to approve my decision? Don't allow the world's definition of wisdom to become your definition of wisdom.
- E — Exalt Christ in Every Area of Life. 1 Corinthians 1:30–31. Christ is not merely part of God's wisdom. Paul says that Christ has become for us “wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption.” Therefore, Christ should affect every area of our lives. Christ is our Wisdom — follow His truth. Christ is our Righteousness — rest in His grace rather than our performance. Christ is our Sanctification — pursue holiness through His transforming work. Christ is our Redemption — remember that we belong to Him. The goal of Gospel wisdom is not simply to become wiser; it is to become more like Christ and bring Him glory.
