The Way of the Wise

True wisdom is demonstrated not by pride or self-promotion but by meekness, purity, peace, mercy, and a life that produces righteous fruit.

  • True wisdom is demonstrated, not merely declared. James 3:13 teaches that genuine wisdom is seen through good conduct and “the meekness of wisdom.”
  • Earthly wisdom is driven by self. Envy and selfish ambition reveal wisdom that is earthly and produce confusion, conflict, and destructive consequences (vv. 14–16).
  • Heavenly wisdom reflects God's character. Wisdom from above is pure, peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, merciful, fruitful, impartial, and sincere (v. 17).
  • Meekness is strength under God's control. Biblical meekness isn't weakness; it is the ability to respond with humility, gentleness, and self-control rather than allowing pride, anger, or self-interest to rule.
  • Godly wisdom produces a harvest of righteousness. Those who practice heavenly wisdom become peacemakers who sow seeds of righteousness (v. 18). Ultimately, this wisdom points us to Christ, whose humility, mercy, obedience, and sacrificial love provide the perfect model for the wisdom of the meek.

  • M — Manage Your Strength Under God’s Control: “By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.” — James 3:13. Meekness is not weakness. It is strength surrendered to God. Control your words when you are angry. Resist the urge to prove that you are right. Let God govern your reactions. Choose humility when you could demand your way. Before I respond, ask: “Am I trying to honor Christ or simply win?”
  • E — Exchange Envy for Encouragement: “But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts…” — James 3:14. Earthly wisdom compares, competes, and seeks recognition. Heavenly wisdom celebrates what God is doing in others. Don't measure your ministry against someone else's. Rejoice when another person succeeds. Encourage rather than compete. Thank God for the gifts He has given others. When someone else is blessed, celebrate instead of compare.
  • E — Embrace Peace and Gentleness: “The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield…” — James 3:17. Meek wisdom changes how we handle disagreements. Be willing to listen before responding. Speak truth without unnecessary harshness. Know when to yield on personal preferences. Pursue reconciliation rather than victory. Not every disagreement requires a battle.
  • K — Keep Producing the Fruit of Righteousness: “Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” — James 3:18. Godly wisdom eventually becomes visible through its fruit. Ask yourself: Am I becoming more merciful? Am I becoming more gentle? Am I becoming more impartial? Am I becoming more sincere? Am I helping create peace where I go? Don't just ask, “Am I knowledgeable?” Ask, “What kind of fruit is my wisdom producing?”
