God’s Mercy in History

Joshua recounted Israel’s history to show how God faithfully guided, protected, and provided for His people despite their repeated failures.

• God mercifully called Abraham out of idolatry and established His covenant promises, demonstrating that His grace initiates salvation and blessing (vv. 2–4).
• God graciously delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt through Moses and Aaron, showing His power to rescue His people when they cannot save themselves (vv. 5–7).
• God faithfully preserved and protected Israel through the wilderness and from both visible and unseen enemies, proving that His care extends to every circumstance (vv. 7–10).
• God gave Israel victory and an inheritance they did not earn, fulfilling His promises by bringing them into the Promised Land and blessing them with cities, vineyards, and homes (vv. 11–13).
• God's mercy throughout Israel's history points to Jesus Christ, through whom believers receive a greater deliverance from sin, a greater victory over evil, and an eternal inheritance by grace.

• M — Meditate on God's Faithfulness. Joshua called Israel to look back and reflect on all that God had done for them. Remembering God's faithfulness strengthens our faith for present and future challenges. "I will remember the works of the LORD" (Psalm 77:11). Regularly reflect on God's past provisions, answered prayers, and acts of grace in your life.
• E — Embrace God's Grace. Abraham was called out of idolatry, and Israel received blessings they did not deserve. God's relationship with His people has always been based on grace. "By grace you have been saved through faith" (Ephesians 2:8). Live with humility, recognizing that every spiritual blessing comes from God's grace rather than personal merit.
• R — Rely on God's Protection. God protected Israel from Pharaoh, the Amorites, Balak, and Balaam. He was working even when His people could not see it. "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1). Trust God during uncertain times, knowing He is guarding and guiding you even when circumstances seem threatening.
• C — Celebrate God's Provision. Israel inherited cities they did not build and vineyards they did not plant. God's blessings were gifts of mercy. "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above" (James 1:17). Develop a heart of gratitude by acknowledging God's hand in every blessing and opportunity.
• Y — Yield Yourself to God. The purpose of remembering God's mercy is not merely information but transformation. God's faithfulness should lead to wholehearted devotion. "Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God" (Romans 12:1). Surrender every area of your life to God in grateful response to His mercy and grace.
