The Arrival

In Gospel of Luke 2, the twelve-year-old Jesus in the temple reveals His divine identity and mission, demonstrating His unique Sonship and unwavering commitment to His Father’s business.

  • Faithful Worship Shapes Spiritual Formation — Jesus is raised in a home that consistently prioritizes worship in Jerusalem, showing the importance of spiritual discipline (vv. 41–42).
  • Jesus Must Be Sought Intentionally — His parents assume He is with them, but must return to Jerusalem to find Him, reminding us not to take His presence for granted (vv. 43–45).
  • Jesus Displays Divine Wisdom Early — In the Temple, He amazes teachers with His understanding, revealing His unique identity even in youth (vv. 46–47).
  • Jesus Declares His Divine Sonship and Mission — “I must be about My Father’s business” reveals His priority and relationship with God (vv. 48–49).
  • Revelation Leads to Humble Growth and Obedience — After this moment, Jesus submits to His parents and grows in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and men (vv. 50–52).

  • T — Train in Faithful Worship (vv. 41–42). Joseph and Mary go to Jerusalem every year for Passover. Jesus is raised in a home shaped by: Consistent worship, Spiritual discipline, Reverence for God. Spiritual formation begins with faithful rhythms, not occasional moments.
  • E — Expect Jesus in the Right Place (vv. 43–45). Jesus remains in Jerusalem while others leave. His parents assume He is with them—but He is not. Jesus is not found where we assume—He is found where the Father’s presence and purpose are central. Do not assume Jesus is “with you”—seek Him where He reveals Himself.
  • M — Marvel at His Wisdom (vv. 46–47). Jesus is in the Temple: Listening, Asking questions, Astonishing teachers. Even at twelve, Jesus displays extraordinary understanding. Application: True engagement with God includes humility (listening) and depth (seeking truth).
  • P — Prioritize the Father’s Business (v. 49) “I must be about My Father’s business.” Jesus lives with divine necessity—His life is oriented around the Father. God’s purposes must take priority over comfort, assumption, or routine.
  • L — Live in Humble Submission (v. 51). Jesus returns home and is subject to His parents. Divine identity does not eliminate human responsibility. Spiritual maturity expresses itself in humility and obedience in everyday life.
  • E — Expand in Holistic Growth (v. 52). Jesus increases in: Wisdom, Stature, Favor with God, Favor with men. Growth is balanced—spiritual, physical, and relational. God’s design for maturity includes every area of life.
