A Divided Kingdom

Divisions

Israel’s disobedience and pride led to the splitting of the nation into two kingdoms under Rehoboam and Jeroboam.

  • Rehoboam’s pride divided the kingdom — instead of listening to wise counsel, he chose harshness, leading to Israel’s rebellion.
  • Jeroboam’s fear corrupted worship — instead of trusting God’s promise, he built golden calves and false altars to secure his throne.
  • The division of Israel fulfilled God’s Word — showing that disobedience to the covenant brings judgment.
  • Ungodly leadership leads God’s people astray — pride, fear, and self-reliance fracture community and open the door to idolatry.
  • Christ is the true King who unites and leads faithfully — unlike Rehoboam or Jeroboam, Jesus rules with humility, truth, and servant-love.

L.E.A.D.

  • L – Listen to Wise Counsel (vv. 6–11): Rehoboam ignored the elders and followed peers who fed his pride.
  • E – Embrace Servant Leadership (vv. 7, 12–14): The elders told Rehoboam: “If you will be a servant to these people…” but he chose domination instead.
  • A – Accept God’s Sovereignty (vv. 21–24): The split was painful, but God said, “This thing is from Me.” His purposes were unfolding, even through failure.
  • D – Deny Fear-Driven Compromise (vv. 25–33): Jeroboam feared losing control, so he created idols and a counterfeit worship system.
