Biblical Thinking
Good teaching doesn’t just inspire—it also cautions. By understanding what led others astray, we grow in wisdom and perseverance.
- The Christian life is a race that requires disciple and endurance: like athletes, believers must train spiritually and run with purpose to obtain an eternal reward (vv. 9:24–27).
- Spiritual privilege does not guarantee spiritual victory: the Israelites experienced God’s power and provision, yet many fell due to disobedience and unbelief (vv. 10:1–5).
- God preserved the failures of Israel as warnings for us: so that we would not repeat their mistakes, especially in the areas of idolatry, immorality, testing God, and grumbling (vv. 10:6–11).
- Pride leads to downfall: Paul warns, “Let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall” (v. 10:12); we must remain humble and dependent on God.
- God is faithful in every temptation: He will never let us be tempted beyond what we can bear, and always provides a way of escape (v. 10:13).

- R — Run with Purpose: Live the Christian life intentionally. Just as athletes train with focus for a prize, we must live with eternal purpose, not aimlessly. (vv. 9:24–27)
- A — Avoid Presumption: Don’t mistake past blessings for present obedience. Israel had many spiritual experiences, but still fell. Be humble and alert. (vv. 10:1–12)
- C — Cling to Christ: Christ is our Rock, present even in trials (vv. 10:4, 10:13)
- E — Examine and Endure: Regularly examine our walk. Take heed lest you fall. (vv. 10:12–13)
